HabitualApp: Making Habits that Stick

Today I am launching HabitualApp, a free webapp for tracking thirty day trial habits. You can find it here, and follow it on twitter, @habitualapp

It’s the time of year for new year’s resolutions, and thirty day trials are a great technique for making resolutions succeed. They can be used to:

  • Change existing behaviours, such as go to bed earlier,
  • Add new behaviours, like eat more fruit,
  • Remove unwanted behaviours, like giving up smoking.

You pick an action to do, or not do, every day, and then do (or don’t do) it every day for thirty days. Since thirty days is a managable amount of time, and one action is also managable, the idea is that it is easy to stick with. However you only consider the trial a success if you do thirty days in a row, with no exceptions. If you miss a day, then you restart from day one!

Each day that you do whatever it is you have decided to do, you mark it on a calendar. Once three or four days are marked, the psychological drive to not waste those good days by having to start again kicks in. That helps keep the motivation going, until the end of the trial.

Habitual shows you this calendar, and lets you mark which days you have done. Just type in the name of the new habit, and a new calenar will be created for it, as well as a post made to your Facebook account, so your friends can see what you are doing (and hopefully be supportive).

Login is done entirely through Facebook, so you need to have a Facebook account to use it. This is something of an experiment, and if it takes off I may add Twitter, Google and general OpenID login. I will have to see how things progress.

Here are a couple of links if you want to read more about the idea of the thirty day trial:

I’m really looking forward to seeing this application up and running. I was going to post about it
on my blog – http://www.difficultventure.wordpress.com but at the moment the login seems to just keep refreshing the page in a loop. I’ve tried it in Chrome and Firefox. I’m also looking forward to when you make
an option to login without facebook. Either way it looks great, can’t wait

Are you still getting this? I have had this a few times, but pretty sure I have found and removed the offending bit of code

Yes I’m still getting the problem, in chrome and firefox it seems to just refresh the page constantly without showing any gui. After testing it in Internet explorer the Login button is just completely missing so I don’t have the chance to login, please keep working on it though. This seems like something which could be amazingly helpful to many people.

Can you try reloading the page while forcing a cache-update. (Hold down shift when clicking on reload I believe) I only experienced this while the “Like this page on facebook” link was shown, and that is currently not on the site.

If that doesn’t work, drop me an email at laurie at habitualapp dot com. I’m just preparing the app as a chrome extension, and I can add you to the beta-tester list

Hmm I’m not sure what the deal is, I haven’t clicked on the button yet so it’s not that but yea even while pressing shift click it’s still doing the same deal. Ah well, better luck next time I guess

    Hi Dennis,

No, I took the site down, as it wasn’t getting much use, and there are a few alternatives. I will write a post on this blog sometime soon giving you some alternate options
